Cagliari sporting director Nicola Salerno has defended the club's owner Massimo Cellino against allegations he is more interested in Leeds United, the English side he has just acquired, than the Serie A outfit.

Cellino recently completed a long-running takeover of Leeds, buying 75 per cent of the Championship club after defying initial disqualification from the Football League.

With Cagliari experiencing relegation battle worries in Serie A, the Italian was recently criticised by former club goalkeeper Mario Ielpo.

He commented: "There's the stadium, the president seems more interested in Leeds than Cagliari, changes the coach every two days. The situation is really bad for a team as important to Sardinia as this."

But that is not how Salerno views the situation.

"What is happening? A sale of Cagliari? I do not know if that is something that can happen", he told Tutto Mercato.

"You have to ask [Cellino].

"Personally I see him taking a keen interest in Cagliari."
