AS Roma club captain Francesco Totti wants Italian clubs to again perform well in the Champions League as they used to a few years ago.

Roma finished second in the league table behind Juventus and have qualified for the Champions League after a two-season gap.




Totti is excited to return to the Champions League and considers it the best club competition in the world.

“The Champions League is the top of international football, where the best players play”, the 37-year-old told Sky Italia.

Totti admits that the Champions League has been dominated by English and Spanish clubs in recent seasons.

However, the 37-year-old was quick to remind everybody that the Italian clubs used to dominate the Champions League and believes they can achieve the same levels of success in the near future.

“Lately British clubs and the Spanish clubs have achieved success but the Italian clubs but are not so limited.

“Until a few years ago it was Italy who obtained significant results, we must return to those levels."

AC Milan have won the European Cup/Champions League seven times and they are second to Real Madrid’s ten triumphs.

Inter Milan under Jose Mourinho was the last Italian club to win the Champions League when they beat Bayern Munich in the final in 2010.
