Former West Ham midfielder Lee Bowyer has backed Sam Allardyce to continue at Upton Park, explaining the ex-Bolton boss "knows the league inside out".

A significant section of the West Ham crowd have turned against Allardyce, arguing he employs a style of football alien to the club and has failed to hit the heights expected.

Nevertheless, the West Ham board have backed Allardyce, although he has been instructed to produce a more attractive style of football and a top-ten finish.

And Bowyer feels Allardyce is the man for the job, due to his sheer ability to grind out results when needed.

"He is a manager that knows the league inside out and he gets results. He can grind a result out and sometimes that is what you have to do, grind results out. West Ham beat Spurs three times in one season", Bowyer, who had two spells at the club in the 2000s, told West Ham's site.

"I don't think it has been a bad season, sometimes you can't win pretty, you have to grind it out and we did what we had to do at times when it was needed.

"The club, although it is sad to leave the Boleyn Ground, are moving in the right direction with the move to the Olympic Stadium."
