West Ham United’s new signing Mauro Zarate is hoping to emulate his countryman Carlos Tevez’s cult status at Upton Park.

Zarate joined West Ham towards the end of last month from Argentine outfit Velez Sarsfield on a three-year contract.

The 27-year-old striker has lauded Tevez’s performance at West Ham and said that he is not as good a player as his fellow countryman but he too hopes to become a fan favourite at Upton Park.

Tevez joined West Ham in 2006 from Corinthians and after an initial struggle, became a fan favourite at the club through his performances. He was named the Hammer of the Year for the 2006/07 campaign. The Argentine joined Manchester United the following season.

"Carlos is a fantastic player and a fantastic person. I don't think I can do the same as he did, but I hope I can become as big a favourite at this club as he was”, Zarate told the club’s official site.

Zarate scored 20 goals in 35 appearances for Velez Sarsfield this season and played in the Premier League for Birmingham City in 2008 on loan from Qatari league side Al-Sadd.
