Cagliari sporting director Nicola Salerno is closing on agreeing to move to Palermo, despite continued links with Leeds United.

Salerno had been a key man under Massimo Cellino at the Rossoblu, but following Cellino's sale of the Sardinian club, his time at Cagliari is coming to an end.

The deal-maker had added to the speculation he could move to Leeds by admitting it was likely he would link up with Cellino once again, but Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has moved to scupper that.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Salerno is just a step away from agreeing to go to Palermo, with his primary demand having been a two-year contract.

Palermo won Serie B last season and Zamparini is keen for Salerno to begin building a team to survive and flourish in Serie A.

It remains to be seen if Leeds owner Cellino will move to make a late move to convince Salerno to head to Elland Road instead.

Salerno's contract at Cagliari expires on 30th June.
