Former England captain Ray Wilkins has joined Aston Villa as assistant manager to Tim Sherwood.

The 58-year-old has been appointed as Sherwood’s assistant and is expected to bring his vast knowledge and experience of football to Aston Villa.




Wilkins will immediately begin working with the club.

Sherwood has expressed his delight at the appointment of Wilkins and is looking forward to working with the veteran.
 


"I'm really pleased to bring Ray on board”, Sherwood told the club’s website. “He has a fantastic knowledge of the game and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Wilkins began his career at Chelsea in 1973 and spent six seasons at Stamford Bridge.

He then played at a variety of clubs, most notably Manchester United, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Rangers FC and Queens Park Rangers before concluding his playing career at a number of lower league clubs.

As an England international he captained the Three Lions on ten occasions, making 84 appearances in total.

He began his managerial career soon after with QPR in 1994 and then Fulham in 1997. He then served as assistant coach at Watford, Millwall, England Under-21s and Chelsea, where he was caretaker as well during two different spells.

Most recently, he was the manager of the Jordan national team.
