Jose Holebas has denied that he has completed a transfer from Roma to Watford and insists he is baffled by the Italian side and the English club announcing the deal as complete.

The Greek left-back insists that if a transfer has been agreed then it has happened without his knowledge and explained as he is in Germany at present he could not physically have signed a contract with the Premier League new boys.

Holebas said in a statement provided to Inside Futbol: "They [AS Roma and Watford] agreed my transfer without asking me.

"I haven't signed at the moment. I have to check my new contract first."

The former Olympiacos player claims he is in the dark over why Roma have agreed to sell him to Watford, especially as he was happy to remain at the Stadio Olimpico.

"I don't know why this happened. I didn't want to leave the club.

"I returned to Germany after my holidays in Dubai and everybody is telling me that it's official.

"I am in Germany right now. How could I sign the contract? That's impossible!"

Holebas was snapped up by Roma in 2014 following his accomplished performances for Greece at last summer's World Cup in Brazil, when he helped his country reach the last 16 stage against all the odds.

The defender quickly kept former Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole out of the Roma side and clocked up 24 appearances in Serie A for Rudi Garcia's side, who finished as runners-up to Juventus.
