Rangers forward Martyn Waghorn has insisted that the best striking partner he has ever played with is former Sunderland hitman Andy Cole.

The duo played together briefly at Sunderland in 2007, when Waghorn broke into the Black Cats first team after progressing through the club’s youth system.

On the other hand, Cole was in the swansong of his career, with the striker leaving the Stadium of Light after just seven games on a loan deal to Burnley.

Waghorn, who also failed to make his mark at Sunderland, however, considers Cole his best strike partner to date.

“It would be Andy Cole”, Waghorn told Rangers TV, when asked who the best striking partner he has played with is.

“That’s when he came to Sunderland, he was up there.”

Cole, who scored 118 goals in 269 matches for Manchester United between 1995 and 2001, helped the club to five Premier League titles, one Champions League and two FA Cups.

At Sunderland, where he played under the tutelage of his former Red Devils team-mate Roy Keane, Cole was reunited with Dwight Yorke, with whom he played together at Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers.
