Former French international Eric Di Meco is still not convinced about Dimitri Payet and feels the West Ham man’s European Championship squad berth is still not guaranteed.

Payet, who turns 29 today, has been in pristine form for West Ham this season since joining the club from Marseille last summer, and his performances in England earned him a recall to the France squad.

And he earned widespread praise for his performances against the Netherlands on Friday night, when he played the full 90 minutes in France’s 3-2 win over the Dutch.

Many are convinced that Payet will be in the France squad for this summer’s European Championship, but Di Meco is not that sure and feels Didier Deschamps is still undecided about the Hammer.

He believes that the playmaker’s performance against Russia tonight will hold the key, and is of the opinion that many went a bit too far with their praise for Payet for his performance against the Netherlands.

The former French international was quoted as saying by Maxifoot: “When we say that Payet earned his place against the Netherlands, I do not agree, and I am not sure they know what is going on in Didier Deschamps’ mind.

“If he goes to the Euros then it will be because of the season with his club, and it will be confirmed if he plays well against Russia, but if he is average then everything will deflate.

“I think we hyped him a lot for his good performance on Friday night.”

Payet has been in sublime form for West Ham this season, scoring eleven goals and providing as many assists in 30 appearances for the club in all competitions.
