Liverpool linked midfielder Piotr Zielinski is closing in on a transfer to Napoli after AC Milan struggled to gather the funds needed to sign the Poland international.

The 22-year-old midfielder attracted the eyes of many clubs with his performances during his loan stint at Empoli last season, leading to speculation surrounding his future.

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for the midfielder, but they have not agreed a fee with Udinese to capture Zielinski, despite the player’s preference of joining the Merseyside club.

Napoli have had an agreement in place with Udinese for some time, and were waiting for the player to make up his mind about his future.

AC Milan have also been interested in Zielinski, but according to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia, the Naples club have surpassed the Rossoneri in the chase for the Poland internaitonal.

They recently reopened talks with player’s advisers over a transfer and it has been suggested that the midfielder is close to sealing a transfer to the San Paolo.

The Rossoneri have been struggling for funds this summer, and are not in a position to challenge Napoli for the midfielder’s signature at the moment.

Napoli are set to pay a fee of around €16m to €18m to Udinese for Zielinski, and the midfielder is expected to play in their colours next season.
