Former Chelsea star Jason Cundy has praised Gary Cahill’s ability to chip in with important goals this season.

Despite being a defender, Cahill has scored eight goals in 39 appearances in all competitions in the present campaign, with six of those coming in the Premier League.

Cahill has managed to find the back of the net in Chelsea’s last two league games against Southampton and Everton respectively; his goals helped the Blues to win both games and maintain their position at the top of the Premier League table.

The 31-year-old also netted the winner during his side’s 2-1 victory over Stoke City in March.

And Cundy, who feels Cahill has been defensively brilliant this season, explained that the England international’s knack of scoring goals has significantly improved in the current campaign.

“A part of his game which has improved remarkably this year is [scoring] goals, not just goals but important goals”, he said on Chelsea TV, when discussing Cahill.

“He scored the winner at Stoke and then his goal made us go 2-1 up just before half-time against Southampton.

“He scored the second goal last weekend [against Everton] and he has been scoring big goals.

“He has been defensively brilliant and has also been scoring at the other end of the pitch.”

Cahill, who joined Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers in 2012, has thus far amassed 235 appearances in all competitions for the Stamford Bridge outfit, scoring 25 times.
