Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has saluted Tyler Roberts' performance in the Whites' 3-0 Championship win over Preston North End at Elland Road on Tuesday night.

Roberts was handed a start as Leeds' wrestled to cope with the injury absences of strikers Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford.

Bielsa's side took the lead through Liam Cooper, who headed in from a Barry Douglas corner kick, in the 37th minute.

Leeds laid siege to the Preston goal, but had to wait until Roberts scored with a chipped finish in the 74th minute to make it 2-0, before the striker then grabbed a second with a header in the 82nd minute from a Mateusz Klich cross.

Bielsa was pleased with what he saw from Roberts and dubbed his performance "interesting".

He told his post match press conference: "He started pre-season work later than the others, he has put in much effort and he has been playing as a right winger because I asked him to – but I heard that he liked to play as a number nine.

"The circumstances [due to injuries] offered him a space.

"It was an interesting performance.

"He is a very young player and I am very happy for him.

"He deserves it", the Leeds boss added.

Roberts will be looking to kick on in Leeds' next game, which comes at home against Garry Monk's Birmingham City side on Saturday.
