The Wearside-based club were held to a 1-1 draw by Wimbledon at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday after the hosts saw eight first team stars test positive ahead of the game.
While Sunderland dropped points at home and now have several players struck down, 21-year-old Curry making his senior debut for the club proved to be one of the positives of the night.
Reflecting on the youngster’s debut, Blacks Cats head coach Johnson hailed the performance as a bright one, but admitted that he was not fed the ball enough.
Johnson explained that he decided to hand Curry his debut after he grabbed a brace against Norwich City Under-23s on Monday and feels the striker showed everything he expects from his youngsters.
“I’m sure he’d have wanted it with a packed Stadium of Light but a debut is a debut“, Johnson told SAFC TV.
“He was very very happy to play, he was very keen to play.
“He scored two yesterday [Monday, ed.] and you think to yourself ‘well, go on then, sling the young lad on, let’s see what he can do’.
“I thought he was bright and busy, we didn’t quite feed him enough.
“But he certainly gave everything he had in that spell and that’s what we want from our young players.“
Having made his senior debut for Sunderland, Curry will now have set his eyes on earning more playing time for Johnson’s side this season.
