Lingard won and converted the rebound from a penalty in West Ham’s 2-0 win over Leeds United at the London Stadium on Monday night.

It was his fourth goal in six games for the Hammers since joining the club on loan from Manchester United in the January transfer window.

Wright feels that Lingard has shown good mental fortitude to come out of his troubles at Manchester United and prove himself at West Ham this season.

He also praised David Moyes for giving the 28-year-old a chance to rekindle his career at the London Stadium and believes West Ham are the perfect club for Lingard to further progress in his career.

The former striker said on Premier League TV after the game: “It must have been tough for him simply because he was not playing, not even being involved in matchday squads and not travelling but training all the time.

“He has shown a lot of mental strength and for David Moyes to recognise that he can come to West Ham with [Jarrod] Bowen playing well and [Pablo] Fornals and [Manuel] Lanzini maybe not playing as much as they should be.

“And putting him in the side alongside Michail Antonio, he likes to progress the ball, he likes to take people on and know he can score.

“It’s the perfect place for him and I am so pleased that it worked out for him.”

Lingard’s loan spell ends in the summer and there are suggestions West Ham want to sign him on a permanent deal from Manchester United at the end of the season.
