The Magpies manager is keen to add to his midfield options ahead of the start of the new season and has identified the 26-year-old as an ideal candidate.

Hughes, who has entered the final year of his deal with Watford, is currently in a contract dispute with the Hornets and could be sold for £12m this summer.

Newcastle are working under a tight budget during the transfer window, but Bruce could be open to the idea of offering a player in a potential swap deal for the midfielder.

However, the 60-year-old is facing opposition from some of the senior scouts at Newcastle, who are against the idea of making a move for Hughes.

It remains to be seen if Bruce can convince those at St. James’ Park of a move for the Englishman, who is currently training away from Watford’s first team squad.

It is said that the Newcastle manager could offer Isaac Hayden in a potential swap deal for Hughes, with Watford claimed to be admirers of the Magpies star.

While it is unclear if such a deal can be agreed upon, Southampton have emerged as suitors for Hayden, who could be available for around £10m this summer.
