The Scottish giants want to snap up last season’s Eredivisie top scorer and have been in discussions with VVV-Venlo in an attempt to do a deal.
However, Celtic have seen talks with the player’s camp go less smoothly and are at real risk of failing to land one of Ange Postecoglou’s targets.
Celtic have made a new approach to Giakoumakis, but according to Inside Futbol’s John Georgopoulos, there remains distance between the two parties.
Giakoumakis is also wanted by German side Werder Bremen and has toured the club’s facilities.
An offer from Werder Bremen is still on the table and unless Celtic can improve upon their approach then they will miss out on Giakoumakis.
Werder Bremen are expected to hold a meeting with VVV-Venlo as they try to push forward in their attempts to sign the prolific striker.
The German outfit believe they have made a compelling proposal to the player, detailing where they see him fitting into their plans.
However, Celtic are battling for the Scottish Premiership title and could reach the Europa League group stage, while Werder Bremen were relegated to the 2. Bundesliga last season.
