The Magpies splashed out £25m to secure a deal to sign Joe Willock from Arsenal and he was the number one target for Bruce this summer.

The Newcastle manager recently conceded that the club broke some self-imposed rules to sign the midfielder and money is now tight going into the final week of the transfer window.

He revealed that the club only have money to sign players on loan and not on permanent deals as the transfer window clock tikcs down.

“A difficult situation with finances so if there is maybe a loan deal who can help us then that’s what we’ll try and do”, Bruce said in a press conference.

“But as for bringing in somebody permanently, I can say that’s probably not going to happen.”

Newcastle have been linked with a loan move for Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury, but Bruce refused to discuss any specific names.

However, he admitted that the club have some work to do in terms of strengthening the squad in the final week of the window.

“It would be unfair of me to mention other players.

“There’s a lot out there at the moment and, in the last week of the window, I believe there’s a bit of work to do.

“But, as we’ve seen all throughout the summer, it’s been difficult for a lot of clubs.”
