The European champions are hopeful of bolstering their midfield options with the addition of Saul from Atletico Madrid this summer.

Chelsea made an offer to take Saul on loan with an option to make the move permanent, but saw their attempts to stall after the Spanish club moved goalposts.

Atletico Madrid are claimed to have second thoughts about sanctioning a loan move to the midfielder, while they are also reluctant to let him leave without bringing in a replacement.

There have been suggestions that the Spain international will not join Chelsea this summer, but the deal is not dead in the water yet.

Chelsea, as well as all involved parties, have not given up hopes of being able to reach an agreement over Saul’s transfer.

With just hours remaining in the transfer window, the Blues face a race against time to get a deal for the 26-year-old over the line.

Jules Kounde is another player Chelsea have been hoping to sign before today’s transfer deadline, but Sevilla are demanding his full €80m release clause.
