The England international was heavily linked with a move away from the Hampshire outfit in the recently concluded transfer window, with Aston Villa and Spurs keen on him.

Aston Villa had a £25m bid turned down by Southampton, while Tottenham had been tipped to make a move for Ward-Prowse, who then put an end to speculation by signing a new deal with the Saints.

Reflecting on Ward-Prowse’s links with Aston Villa and Tottenham, Southampton team-mate Romeu has insisted that he was convinced the midfielder would not leave.

The Spaniard explained that he was aware of the clubs linked with Ward-Prowse, but was confident that the 26-year-old would not go as he feels his relationship with Southampton is perfect.

If you want me to be honest, I never expected Prowsey to go anywhere“, Romeu told Hampshire Live.

He belongs to the club and the club belongs to him. It is the perfect relationship.

He has been here since a kid and he improves his game still he’s, even as the leader.

I knew about the rumours, I knew about the clubs that were linked but I just did not see that happening at all.

Romeu also insisted that Ward-Prowse did not even consider any of the options he had in the summer and is of the view that his presence is good news for everyone at Southampton.

He did not even consider any of those options. He loves it here“, the midfielder added.

The fact that he is staying here for a long time is great news for everyone around here, definitely.

Having decided to stay at Southampton, Ward-Prowse will be hopeful of doing enough to earn a place in England’s squad for the World Cup next year.
