After beating Manchester United in the previous round of the EFL Cup, David Moyes’ side booked a place in the quarter-finals of the competition with a win over Manchester City on Wednesday.
Manchester City had seven shots on target in the game, but Areola proved to be an unbeatable figure in goal before West Ham went on to clinch the win on penalties.
West Ham defender Diop has hailed his countryman’s performance against the Premier League champions as fantastic and insisted that the goalkeeper is not a world champion for no reason.
The central defender explained that he has known Areola’s abilities as a goalkeeper for a long time and feels he displayed his qualities against Manchester City.
“Alphonse was fantastic“, Diop told West Ham TV.
“I have known his qualities for a long time now and he is not a world champion for nothing.
“I know his quality and it showed on Wednesday night.“
Areola has made four appearances across all competitions for West Ham so far this season and has kept clean sheets in each of them.
