The 33-year-old centre-back has started all of West Ham’s eleven Premier League games but suffered a serious knee injury in their win over Liverpool last weekend.

The defender could be out for the rest of the season and his current contract with the Hammers expires next summer.

West Ham have an option to extend it one more year but for the moment they have not made a decision over it.

But it has been claimed should Ogbonna’s recovery take longer than expected, West Ham will exercise the option on his contract.

Ogbonna is appreciated at the club and the Hammers are not ready to leave in the lurch when the contract expires.

They will extend his deal in order to support his recovery and get him fit and back in action at some point next year.

David Moyes will now hope that the other defenders in his squad step up in the absence of the experienced Italian.
