The left-back is one of three Japanese players Celtic are looking to sign, with Daizen Maeda and Yosuke Ideguchi also on the club’s wish list.

Hatate is out of contract at Kawasaki in February, but wants to make the move to link up with Ange Postecoglou in the January window.

He is set to hold talks with his club this week as he tries to make a switch to Celtic next month happen.

Hatate has never played for any club other than Kawasaki and the 24-year-old, who is also yet to be capped at international level by Japan, is keen to try his luck in Scotland.

He would add to Postecoglou’s options at left-back, though is also able to operate in midfield and further up the left flank if needed.

This season Hatate clocked a total of 37 appearances for Kawasaki, scoring on six occasions and providing three assists for his team-mates.

And he could be one of a clutch of Japanese players landing at Celtic Park during next month’s transfer window.

*Amendment: An earlier version of this story specified that the meeting would take place next week and not this week. This was in error and has been corrected.
