Coutinho has agreed to join Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season where he will work under his former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard.

The two clubs also have an agreement in place for his loan and the move is now subject to the Brazilian passing a medical and getting a work permit.

Aston Villa will also reportedly pay less than half of his current wages at Barcelona as part of the agreement.

The club have confirmed they have an option to buy Coutinho at the end of his loan spell and the figure which would be needed has now been identified.

The Midlands club will have to pay a fee of £33m if they want to keep the Brazilian on a permanent contract.

Coutinho’s performances will be assessed by Gerrard and his staff before they take a call on whether to keep him beyond the loan stint.

Barcelona will hope that Coutinho does enough to continue at Aston Villa as they are desperate to offload his substantial wages.
