Villa have an agreement in place with Barcelona for the signature of the Brazilian on loan until the end of the season.

The move is now subject to the midfielder passing a medical and getting a work permit to play in England, but both those steps are not expected to present the Premier League side with a problem.

Steven Gerrard spoke to the player to convince the player to move to Villa Park in the ongoing transfer window and Coutinho’s wages were a stumbling block.

But it has been claimed that Aston Villa will only fork out less than 50 per cent of his wages and bonuses during his loan stint with the club.

Aston Villa have managed to work out an agreement with Barcelona that will not see them smash their wage structure to get Coutinho.

The Catalan giants were keen to offload his wages this month but have agreed to bear half of his salary in order to let him go.

It remains to be seen whether Aston Villa manage to push the loan move through to have Coutinho in the team to face Manchester United in the FA Cup on Monday night.
