The Lions have backed new boss Steven Gerrard in the ongoing window and have already roped in Philippe Coutinho on an initial loan from Barcelona and Lucas Digne from Everton.

Gerrard is still keen on making further signings in the ongoing window and is now prioritising adding a new centre-back to squad.

Aston Villa saw Manchester United recalling loanee Axel Tuanzebe earlier this month owing to a lack of game time, even though Gerrard wanted to keep him at the club, while first team regular Ezri Konsa suffered a hip injury in their latest league outing.

The Midlands outfit are waiting to see how Konsa’s injury situation develops but as it stands, Gerrard only has two senior central defenders at his disposal in Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause.

Aston Villa want to bring in a new centre-back before the winter window slams shut but they are still evaluating whether they should try to make a permanent signing or bring in a stop-gap option for the remainder of the season and re-assess next summer.

Gerrard has a number of defenders from the Under-23s squad to call up on if Konsa is ruled out of Aston Villa’s upcoming top flight clash away at Everton but he ideally wants to have four senior centre-backs.

Aston Villa are pushing to land a new centre-half but only have under two weeks to do further business in the current transfer window.
