Defoe has attained free agent status having left Scottish champions Rangers last week and is attracting interest from a clutch of clubs across England.

The hitman’s former side Sunderland are also linked with interest in his services, with boss Lee Johnson looking to add more firepower up front as they gun for automatic promotion from League One.

And Defoe revealed that a number of interested parties have been messaging him on his phone since leaving Rangers.

The 39-year-old acknowledged that returning to the Stadium of Light is definitely an option for him as he mulls over where to play football next.

While discussing his immediate future, Defoe told talkSPORT: “To be honest, it has been mad.

“My phone has just gone mad to be honest.

“And I think if your phone is still ringing at 39, it is a good thing.

“So, we have got a few options, got a few options.

“Obviously I think the Sunderland one, I think that is probably best documented out there.”

It remains to be seen whether Defoe will make a sensational return to Sunderland, where he played between 2015 and 2017, scoring 37 goals across all competitions.
