The 24-year-old midfielder has emerged as a big target for Newcastle in the final days of the transfer window and talks are under way to sign him.

It emerged on Tuesday that a bid worth €40m was tabled with Lyon, who are contemplating whether to accept the offer.

But it has been claimed that an agreement is already in place between Newcastle and Lyon over a deal worth €40m and the ball is now in the player’s court.

The Magpies have offered him a contract worth €4.5m season to move to St. James’ Park, but according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it, the player is not convinced about joining Newcastle.

The offer from Newcastle has not been enough to instantly convince the player to leave Lyon and join a club who are in the middle of a relegation battle in the Premier League.

Guimaraes is happy with the financial terms offered by Newcastle but he only wants to leave Lyon for a bigger club performing on a grander stage than the relegation quagmire of the Premier League.

Newcastle have five days to convince the player to leave Lyon and consider the move to St. James’ Park.

The Magpies have continued to struggle to attain targets with suggestions that a deal to sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United is also on the verge of collapse.
