Tottenham have been in talks with Porto over signing Diaz for several weeks and their attention turned towards getting the deal done once they missed out on Adama Traore on Thursday.
The north London club recently tabled a fresh bid for the winger with Porto but are now on the verge of missing out on him to Liverpool.
Diaz was Jurgen Klopp’s target for the summer but it was moved forward once it became clear that the player is prepared to move in January.
The Reds are now finalising a deal worth €45m and another €15m in add-ons with Porto, but it has been claimed that their upfront payment for Porto will be less than Tottenham’s.
The north London club were prepared to pay more upfront to Porto but the overall size of the deal would have been not as big as what the Reds offered.
Diaz’s approval also mattered and the player preferred to join Liverpool over Tottenham in the final days of the window.
Liverpool made their offer in the early hours of Friday morning and are now close to getting the deal over the line to sign the winger.
