The Belgian is a key part of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid squad and is contracted at the Madrid giants until the summer of 2024.

Carrasco is in his second spell at Atletico Madrid, returning to the club in January 2020 on an initial loan deal, but his future at the club is under the scanner owing to transfer interest from elsewhere.

Both Newcastle and Tottenham, two clubs prepared to spend this month, are holding talks with the player’s agent Pini Zahavi, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.

It is claimed that both clubs want to sign the Belgium international before the window closes.

And they could trigger his €60m release clause at Atletico Madrid to do the deal.

If either club trigger the clause then Atletico Madrid would be powerless to prevent Carrasco’s departure today.

It remains to be seen whether the deal will develop or become a swoop that both clubs looked at but ultimately decided not to do.

Carrasco is in his second spell at Atletico Madrid, following a big money stint in China.
