Werner has failed to justify his billing at Chelsea since he joined the club in 2020 and has scored just 19 times in 78 appearances for the club.

The German has been a bit-part player at Chelsea this season and has just one league goal to his name.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move back to the Bundesliga, where Dortmund are interested in getting their hands on him.

It has been claimed that Werner’s name is being seriously discussed in the Dortmund boardroom for a summer move, but according to German broadcaster Sport1, they are still not completely convinced.

Dortmund are especially wary of the money they would have to invest in order to take the forward to the Westfalenstadion.

The club believe it would take at least €40m to convince Chelsea to sell him and they would then still have to match his €16m per year salary.

For the moment, the Bundesliga giants are still discussing whether they would be able to afford such a transaction.

And there are still doubts about what would happen at Chelsea as the current sanctions mean the club cannot sell or buy players.
