Targett has started all of Newcastle United’s eleven Premier League games that he has been available for since joining on loan from Aston Villa in January.

The defender has indicated that he is keen to stay at Newcastle beyond the end of his loan stint and sign a permanent contract with the club.

Eddie Howe recently confirmed that opinions are yet to be fully formed despite him being impressed with what Targett has done since joining the club.

And it has been claimed that the Newcastle hierarchy remain very much undecided about whether to sign the Lions loanee on a permanent deal.

Howe is happy with what he has seen of Targett and the defensive stability that he has brought to the Newcastle backline.

Newcastle have secured a purchase option in Targett’s deal that they can trigger for a fee around £15m.

The Magpies are also considering bringing in a more progressive left-back who would be able to contribute more in the attacking third as well like Kieran Trippier on the other flank.
