The defender will be out of contract next season at AC Milan and has been studying offers from clubs ahead of a move.

Lazio have been in talks with his representatives and he has been expected to join the Roman club in the ongoing transfer window.

But it has been claimed that Lazio are now wary of losing out on the defender to the riches available in the Premier League.

Newcastle are interested in getting their hands on him and, according to Italian radio station Radiosei, they are ready to offer him a lucrative contract.

The Magpies are prepared to offer him a deal worth €4m per season to move to St. James’ Park this summer.

It is far more than that Lazio are prepared to offer but the Serie A giants are banking on the defender’s will to play for them.

He has already rejected an offer from Fulham, but interest from Newcastle is something the Italian is struggling to ignore.

Aston Villa are also interested in him and are considering making an offer for the defender this summer.
