Phillips had an injury-ridden campaign for Leeds United during the 2021/22 season, missing 16 games with a hamstring problem but even so recorded a goal and an assist from 23 appearances in all competitions.

The Whites failed to really get going last season and managed to stave off relegation only on the final matchday against Brentford away, with a late winner from Jack Harrison sealing the deal.

The England international, dubbed the Yorkshire Pirlo, will swap Elland Road for the Etihad this summer for a fee in the region of £45m.

Phillips is scheduled to undergo his medical with the Cityzens on Friday, ahead of finalising the move.

The 26-year-old is seen as a like-for-like replacement for departing Brazil international Fernandinho, who opted not to extend his contract.

The Brazilian will join Athletico Paranaense in his homeland after leaving the Premier League champions.

Phillips will compete with established star Rodri for a starting spot in Pep Guardiola’s line-up for the upcoming season, which will begin with the Community Shield fixture against Liverpool at the King Power Stadium.
