The Magpies have turned to alternative options following their failure to snap up their initial attacking target Hugo Ekitike.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is looking to bring in a winger and Bayer Leverkusen man Diaby has emerged as his top target while he sees Alexander Isak as player to bolster the striker role.

But the Bundesliga outfit’s £60m asking price for Diaby has been a stumbling block for Newcastle, though he remains at the top of their transfer wish list.

However, the Magpies are not prepared to end their quest for the France international’s signature yet, and are planning to make one final effort to get a deal over the line.

Newcastle are adamant that they do not pay over the odds for any of their targets this summer and will not match Bayer Leverkusen’s valuation of Diaby.

But Howe’s side are expected to test Die Werkself’s resolve by slapping in an offer for Diaby in the coming days.

As it stands, the 23-year-old’s future is in the hands of the Bayer Leverkusen hierarchy, while Newcastle have Leeds United man Jack Harrison as an alternative winger option.
