Emerson spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Lyon, making 35 appearances in all competitions for Les Gones, scoring a goal, assisting two others and accumulating four cautions and one sending off.

In addition to those games, Emerson had a four-minute cameo for Chelsea in their Premier League opener against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

A move to Lazio would see the 27-year-old reunited with former Chelsea tactician Maurizio Sarri, who has earmarked Emerson as his preferred option for the left-back slot.

The Blues are open to loaning Emerson to the Biancocelesti but they would need to make space in their squad to repatriate the Italian, according to Italian daily Il Messaggero.

Albania international Elseid Hysaj is the most likely candidate to be sacrificed for Emerson, as he and fellow right-footed full-back Adam Marusic are the only options at Sarri’s disposal at left-back.

Emerson is currently under contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2024 and it is likely he will be loaned with an option to buy outright for an as yet unnamed price.

Lazio qualified for the Europa League after finishing in fifth place in Serie A, while Chelsea finished third in the Premier League and will play in the next edition of the Champions League.
