Manchester United’s pursuit of a number 2 goalkeeper led them to the 32-year-old German goalkeeper and they offered him a lucrative four-year deal.

Trapp was initially interested in the move but it was dependent on the two clubs working out an agreement for his transfer.

Eintracht Frankfurt have been reluctant to lose him and their €25m valuation of the player led to Manchester United cooling their interest in him.

And according to German daily Bild, Trapp himself contacted Manchester United on Wednesday and informed them about his decision to stay at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The goalkeeper eventually decided against taking up the offer to move to Old Trafford this summer.

He is the number one at Eintracht Frankfurt while at Manchester United he would have had to dethrone David de Gea.

Manchester United have turned their attention towards other targets and have offered to sign Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka on loan.
