The Magpies had Isak on their radar earlier in the window but cooled interest in him as they were unwilling to match Real Sociedad’s demands for him.

However, in a shocking turn of events, Newcastle returned to the negotiating table for the 22-year-old on Wednesday, agreeing a club record €70m for his signature excluding bonus payments.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has been keen on adding a young striker to his ranks throughout the summer and another injury to first choice hitman Callum Wilson only added to the club’s urgency to bring in a new attacker before the window slams shut on 1st September.

The Tyneside giants’ recruitment department headed by Steve Nickson along with sporting director Dan Ashworth have been working hard this summer on all the club’s transfers and the whole team were on the same page when it came to swooping for Isak.

Newcastle view Isak as a forward capable of playing across the frontline and that is one key reason why the club’s recruitment team unanimously agreed to splash the cash on him.

Isak rarely played out of position from his natural centre-forward role at Real Sociedad, but he is adept in using both his feet.

Newcastle will hope to wrap up all the formalities of a move for Isak and announce him as their marquee signing for this summer soon.
