The microscope has been put on Liverpool’s midfield options this season due to the side’s lacklustre performances and the Reds were forced into the transfer market on deadline day as they loaned Arthur Melo from Juventus.

Liverpool are keen to add to their midfield next summer and, according to Catalan daily SPORT, they are now keen on De Jong.

Klopp’s side are fans of the Dutchman and are looking at him as an arrival for next summer.

Liverpool could look at a swoop in the January transfer window dependent upon their situation in the new year, but they would prefer to move for him in the summer.

For De Jong, moving to a club playing in the Champions League is a key consideration.

The Dutchman has made seven appearances in La Liga for Barcelona so far this season, along with turning out three times in the Champions League.

Manchester United chased De Jong in the last summer transfer window, but could not complete a deal to take him to Old Trafford.
