De Gea is in the final year of his contract at Manchester United with the club having the option to extend it by one more year.

The Spaniard is happy at Old Trafford and is open to spending the rest of his career with the club but there are question marks over his long-term suitability to Erik ten Hag’s style.

The Manchester United manager has insisted that he will evaluate before considering extending De Gea’s stay and the club are looking at potential replacements.

FC Porto’s Diogo Costa is on their shortlist of targets and it has been claimed Simon is also being looked at.

Simon has emerged as the number one for Spain as well and is known for being good with his feet.

Manchester United’s chief goalkeeping scout, Tony Coton, is heading the search for a new goalkeeper.

He has been travelling Europe to look at goalkeepers and feeding back first-hand reviews to the club’s data system.

Ten Hag will get involved in the process if he agrees to seek a replacement for De Gea next summer.

The Spaniard is open to agreeing to a new contract on reduced terms, which would be the low-cost option for Manchester United.
