Pompey progressed to the quarter-finals of the EFL Trophy this season with a 3-0 win over League Two outfit Stevenage on Tuesday at Fratton Park.

Cowley’s side are eighth in the League One table and have also managed to reach the FA Cup third round, where they will take on Tottenham Hotspur on 7th January.

However, the Portsmouth manager admitted that the EFL Trophy is Pompey’s best chance of winning silverware this season and stressed that his team will try to win it.

Cowley added that he has been satisfied with the level of quality the Fratton Park outfit have shown throughout the EFL Trophy campaign and pointed out that the competition demonstrates the attitude of his team through their performance.

“For us, if we’re realistic as a League One club this is the only competition we enter that we can win today”, Cowley was quoted as saying by The News.

“Elite sport is about winning, so when you have the opportunity you do in this competition you have to try to take it.

“I’ve been pleased with the attitude and approach in this competition throughout.

“This competition, it will tell you a lot about the mentality of the group and their enthusiasm and love for the game.

“It’s not always the same intensity and atmosphere, especially in the early rounds, so you have to create your own – and I think we’ve been able to do that throughout the competition.”

On Saturday, Cowley’s side will lock horns with MK Dons, who recently sacked their manager.
