The Black Cats are currently ninth in the Championship table and are vying for a playoff spot this season.
On Wednesday, Sunderland bowed out of the FA Cup after a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Premier League outfit Fulham at the Stadium of Light.
Mowbray revealed that he told his squad that fans want to see the players fighting for the jersey and believes that the players have realised that.
The English tactician is hoping that the Sunderland fans can feel that now they have a side that are fighting and working hard on the field to get results for them.
Mowbray urged the Black Cats faithful to keep supporting them like they have so far so that he can push his players to give fans something to be proud of.
“I do not want to keep repeating myself, but the fans are amazing”, Mowbray told Sunderland TV.
“The game is going on and I have said to the players afterwards that the fans will cheer and roar at a tackle as well as at a brilliant bit of skill and a dribble; they want to see you fighting for the cause and the jersey and I think players are buying into that.
“I have not seen this in the last few years of the club, although I have been working elsewhere, but I hope now they have a team that’s fighting for every ball and working really, really hard.
“We are trying our very best with the group to give ourselves a fighting chance and that’s all we can try to do.
“If they keep supporting us like they have, which has been amazing, home and away, hopefully I can keep driving players and they can keep finding the energy and the levels to give them so much to cheer about.”
Sunderland will welcome Paul Ince’s Reading, who are four points behind Mowbray’s side in the league table, on Saturday to the Stadium of Light.
