Maddison is widely expected to move on from Leicester this summer following their relegation, but the Foxes will not sell him cheaply.

They want £60m for the midfielder, but Spurs are making progress in talks and are ready to pay £40m plus add-ons.

It is suggested that an agreement will be reached this week, while Newcastle, who have also been chasing Maddison and had two offers for him turned down last year, are focused on other targets.

The Magpies are set to sign Italy international midfielder Sandro Tonali.

They are also looking at other targets as they bid to strengthen Eddie Howe’s options for next season.

Whether Newcastle will make a late attempt to rival Tottenham for long-time target Maddison remains to be seen, but it is Spurs who are firm favourites to sign him.

Maddison would be put at the disposal of new Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou if he makes the switch to north London.
