Henderson spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest but did not play after January after suffering a thigh injury that required surgery.

Forest want him back and the club are in talks with Manchester United to take him to the City Ground this summer.

But the Red Devils have rejected Nottingham Forest’s initial proposal of another loan deal with an obligation to buy if Henderson makes a certain number of appearances.

Manchester United are not interested in another loan deal for a player who has had six loan stints in the last seven years.

Henderson has been informed that he will be on the flight to the United States on Wednesday if the two clubs do not find a breakthrough in talks.

With Manchester United on the cusp of signing Andre Onana from Inter Milan, the club are ready to let Henderson leave.

He is Nottingham Forest’s top target and has received assurances from the Midlands club that they will sign him this summer.

Manchester United are only interested in offers of a permanent deal and are waiting for Forest to table the right bid.
