Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray is desperate to add to his attacking options before the transfer window slams shut and a number of options have been under consideration at the Stadium of Light.
One track has led Sunderland to France and interest in Lille attacker Virginius.
The Championship club have even taken the step of offering €5m to Lille for the 20-year-old, according to French radio station RMC.
However, it is not enough for Lille and they have turned down the offer.
Virginius on his part is not being distracted and is claimed to be focused on staying with Lille.
The attacker is excited about being able to turn out for Lille in the Europa Conference League this season.
All eyes will be on whether Sunderland return with a new offer for Virginius before the transfer window closes next week.
Virginius is a France Under-21 international and joined Lille last summer from Sochaux.
