The attacking midfielder was wanted at Barcelona in the last transfer window and he was keen on a move to the Catalan giants.

However, Barcelona’s delicate financial situation meant that they could not make a move to land the Portugal international this summer.

Silva agreed to sign a new deal until 2026 with Manchester City and is now one of the highest-paid players in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

But according to Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo, the midfielder has managed to put in a release clause in the new deal.

It has been claimed that a buyout clause worth £50m is part of the terms the two sides agreed upon.

A move to Barcelona still appeals to Silva and he has left a mechanism in the new deal that could allow him to leave next summer.

It remains to be seen whether the Catalan giants can cobble together the funds to sign him at the end of the ongoing season.
