After beginning the season with two straight defeats, Sunderland have bounced back and with a five-match unbeaten run, they have managed to climb up to fourth place in the league table.

At the weekend, Sunderland will welcome Cardiff City, who have also won their last two games, to the Stadium of Light.

Mowbray admitted that winning three games in a row in the Championship is not an easy job but revealed that he has challenged his Sunderland team to see whether they can make it four on the bounce against Cardiff on Sunday.

The Black Cats boss believes that Cardiff will be full of confidence as they are also on a winning run and he stated that he is expecting a good contest between the two sides.

“The team are functioning alright”, Mowbray told Sunderland’s media.

“I have just said how difficult it is to win three on the bounce in the Championship.

“It is really, really difficult.

“I have just challenged them there about can we do four on the bounce on Sunday.

“Our biggest danger for that game will be ourselves, really.

“We have to turn up and make sure we are right at it, as if we are playing a top, top team and Cardiff, I think have won back to back games now as well so they will be on a high.

“It should be a great game, but a great opportunity for us to keep racking up the points.”

Sunderland have racked up 13 points from seven games and they are three points clear of tenth-placed Cardiff City going into Sunday’s fixture.
