Clement has emerged as the top candidate to become the next Rangers boss with a decision expected to take place in the coming days.
Kevin Muscat is also in the running but there are suggestions Rangers are prepared to offer a four-year deal to the Belgian coach to take charge of the Glasgow giants soon.
Wilson pointed out that managing Club Brugge in Belgium and winning the league is no mean feat given the importance and stature of the club in his home country.
He conceded that Clement did fail at a big club such as Monaco but stressed that the fact that he got the job shows how highly rated the Belgian is as a coach and manager in Europe.
Wilson said on Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard: “He seems to have the right background to take a club the size of Rangers.
“Club Brugge are a huge club; winning the league in his home country is huge but then getting a crack at one of the bigger clubs in Europe at Monaco.
“I know Monaco are not the Monaco from 15 years ago but still a huge role he took on and okay, it didn’t work out.
“But it goes to show his standing in Europe and how he is regarded.”
Rangers are likely to have a new manager in place ahead of facing Hibernian after the break.
