Rohl has been handed the daunting task of guiding the Owls out of trouble in the Championship, but lost his first game in charge, away at Watford, at the weekend.

The young manager is continuing to work on his backroom team and wants Knaubel, who he worked with at RB Leipzig, to join.

Knaubel is happy to make the move, but is waiting for his work permit to come through.

The 43-year-old could well be able to complete the switch on Tuesday.

Once his move to Hillsborough has been finalised, Knaubel will work as Sheffield Wednesday’s set piece specialist coach.

Sheffield Wednesday are in Championship action away at Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday night and it remains to be seen if Knaubel will be in the dugout with Rohl for the game.

The Owls are still looking for their first win of the new Championship season and remain mired in trouble.
