Sessegnon has been battling to recover from a hamstring injury and has not featured for several months.

The full-back returned to light training this month but he is still some way away from being fit to get back in action for the north London club.

Postecoglou conceded that it is tough for a player like Sessegnon who has been battling for months to regain his fitness that would allow him to play again.

He stressed that footballers are not short of motivation to work hard to get back in the team but insisted that it is different for the wing-back as he is not able to be part of the group until he is fit

The Tottenham boss is insistent that everyone behind the scenes is working hard to help Sessegnon get back his fitness.

Postecoglou said in a press conference: “Yeah, it’s tough for him, it’s hard.

“When people ask me about being motivated, look at players like Ryan who have done nothing wrong but are working their backside off every day to try to get back.

“If you need motivation as footballers, there’s plenty of it around.

“You may not be playing or playing as much as you want but you’re still in a good space where you can at least afford yourself the opportunity to play whereas guys like Ryan have got to work hard to get back to the group.

“He’s got a lot of support here, the medical team and sports science staff work hard with him and he’s still part of the team on a daily basis so we’ve just got to get him back to a space where he’s physically able to participate again.”

Sessegnon will be hoping to earn the new manager’s confidence when he is fit and ready to get back into the team.
