The 34-year-old forward missed a large part of the last season due to injuries and featured 16 times for Ipswich Town in their promotion-winning campaign.

This season, Aluko has yet to feature in a game in the Championship for the Tractor Boys but has been a regular in their EFL Cup games.

On Wednesday, Aluko started his first game of the season against Fulham in an EFL Cup tie, where he captained the side but failed to help his team beat the Premier League outfit.

Despite the defeat, McKenna was impressed by the forward’s performance and the Ipswich boss stressed that Aluko showed his quality against the Cottagers and added that the player displayed what he can contribute to the team.

“Sonny’s first game [start] of the season and he was excellent”, McKenna told Ipswich’s media.

“He showed what he can contribute and showed his class.”

Ipswich are set to take on Birmingham City at the weekend and Aluko will be eyeing a spot in McKenna’s starting line on Saturday.
